By taking good care of your wood floor, you’ll increase the chances of keeping it in good condition for many years to come.
Moisture-controlled maintenance for hardwood, laminate and engineered wood
- We highly recommend Bona products for floor maintenance
- We recommend maintaining a relative humidity level of around 40% and + or – 20 degrees Celsius in the house.
- To achieve this, the home must be equipped with a good-quality hydrometer, humidifier and/or dehumidifier to control humidity levels.
- Wood is a material that reacts to variations in relative humidity.
Depending on the season, it either absorbs or releases moisture, thus altering its dimensions. - In summer, when humidity is high, wood absorbs it and expands.
It is therefore advisable to mitigate this excessive humidity with good ventilation or the use of a dehumidifier, or by turning on the heating system. - In winter, when the heating system is on, the relative humidity level in the house is much lower.
The use of a humidifier is recommended to minimize excessive shrinkage of the wood planks.
Maintaining your floor after sanding
- We recommend waiting about 30 days after varnishing a floor before washing it.
This will ensure the best possible shine.
It’s important to know that soap can damage your floor’s finish and leave a thin, greasy film. - For best results when washing your hardwood floor, use cleaning products specially designed for hardwood floors.
NEVER CIRCLE YOUR FLOORS, e.g. oil, cleaner, wax, etc..
This will make it slippery and more difficult to maintain. - During the first 30 days, your new floor is “fragile”.
To avoid scratches, be doubly vigilant during this period.
To keep your floor looking its best for as long as possible, here are a few guidelines to follow.

Scratch-resistant maintenance for hardwood, laminate and engineered flooring.
- Sweep and vacuum the floor regularly to prevent sand and abrasive dust from accumulating and scratching the floor surface.
- At each entrance to the house, place a doormat on the outside and a rug on the inside to prevent winter calcium on latex and the accumulation of sand and dirt in the house.
- Place a mat in front of the kitchen sink and dishwasher to protect the floor from spills of cooking utensils, water or oily detergent.
- Place adequate protection (felt pads) under the legs of all furniture and chairs to make them easier to move and to prevent permanent scratches on the floor.
- Keep high-heeled shoes in good condition.
Damaged or worn high-heeled shoes that have lost their rubber protection allow a nail point or support to pass through and damage the floor surface. - Protect the floor from direct sunlight or other sources of intense artificial light.
Intense light will cause discoloration of the exposed wood surface.
This is perfectly normal.
