History of Laval’s Saint-Martin district
The district of Saint-Martin was formed in 1774 by the detachment of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, thus becoming the fourth parish on the Île Jésus.
Saint-Martin lies at an important crossroads between Montreal and Saint-Eustachethanks in particular to the presence of a post road.
Beginning in the eighteenth century, the parish developed three successive zones: Saint-Martin, L’Abord-à-Plouffe and Pont-Viau.
The first Saint-Martin church in Laval was erected in 1782, straddling the public square.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Saint-Martin became different, with around twenty stores and two factories.
A multitude of economic activities emerged, dominated by the wood industry, which was to be the mainstay of the economy for a long time to come.
